The Coconut tree has been in the Creole traditions for as long as one can imagine. The Coconut tree can be considered as the tree of life because everything from its roots to its trunk, leaves and fruits can be used. In the old days, the leaves of the Coconut tree were used to prepare bags used for a variety of functions such as to put fruits, crops, fish in it. The making of these traditional bags called ‘Kapatya’ is simple but with modernization it has lost its place in the modern culture. Veteran Joseph Monnaie still remembers this craft and he passionately teaches the young Little Explorers how to make the Kapatya as well as traditional boats ‘Pirogue’ and Christmas decorations. This was an opportunity for the adults present to learn the craft as well.
