A new species of freshwater shrimp (sevret), Caridina henriettae, is named after Seychelles most dynamic Conservation Biologist, Dr. Elvina Henriette, who is adamant in saving the Seychelles freshwater biodiversity.
Since 2020, the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle de Paris (MNHN) and the NGO Gaea Seychelles led by Dr, Henriette, conducted baseline surveys and annual biodiversity inventories of fish, micro- and macro-invertebrates in 15 rivers including the collection of genetic materials. These studies led to the discoveries of new occurrences of species at several sites and have improved our knowledge on the freshwater shrimps in the Southwest Indian Ocean.
The new species of shrimp was the subject of a scientific publication by colleagues from MNHN who provided an updated checklist and an identification key of the species of Caridina living in freshwater habitats of the Western Indian Ocean islands, including the Seychelles, the Comoros, Mayotte, La Réunion and Mauritius. Caridina henriettae is not only found in Seychelles, but it has also been recorded in South Africa, Mozambique, Madagascar, Comoros, La Réunion and Mauritius.
